He was indeed the PRD's presidential candidate in 2006 and was also favored to win but narrowly lost to Felipe Calderón . Accusing the National Action party of stealing the election (a charge not supported by independent observers) he refused to concede and his supporters staged large protest rallies for several weeks after the election. López Obrador was "inaugurated" at yet another rally late in 2006 and he has continued to insist the election was stolen.
