Chandrapur is near the Wardha valley coal fields. Its chief industry is rice milling; metal, chemical, pharmaceutical, rubber, plastic, and leather products are manufactured. The town is surrounded by a wall that acts as a flood barrier. It was the capital of the Gond kingdom (12th-18th cent.).
