He became a leader of the Green Mountain Boys , and in May, 1775, he gained his claim to fame by the capture of Crown Point from the British. He later took part in the expedition against Canada that failed at Quebec. He also participated in the fighting that took place after the abandonment of Ticonderoga and was defeated (1777) at Hubbardtown. He was with John Stark at Bennington (1777) and in other operations against General Burgoyne.
