Influenced by the primitivism of Giotto, he is best known for his religious paintings, such as St. Clair Curing the Blind (1837; cathedral, Nantes); his decorations for the Church of St. Séverin, Paris; and his frescoes for Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris.
