Textile production, which began in the Middle Ages, includes cotton, linen, wool, and synthetic fibers; carpets and blankets are important manufactures. Ghent, Kortrijk , Tournai , and Verviers are all textile centers; Mechelen , Bruges , and Brussels are celebrated for their lace.
