Low molecular weight aldehydes, e.g., formaldehyde and acetaldehyde , have sharp, unpleasant odors; higher molecular weight aldehydes, e.g., benzaldehyde and furfural , have pleasant, often flowery, odors and are found in the essential oils of certain plants.
