Earth, in chemistry, metallic oxide not readily reducible by chemical means, e.g., alkaline earths , rare earths , and alumina. The name is also applied to certain absorbent clays, e.g., fuller's earth, and to other compounds, e.g., carbonates, silicates, or hydroxides.
