Bophuthatswana , former black "homeland" and nominal republic, c.17,000 sq mi (44,000 sq km), N South Africa. Bophuthatswana comprised seven separate areas, one along the Botswana border, the remainder landlocked enclaves. The capital was Mmbatho.
