He was professor (1867-72) of reformed dogmatics at Strasbourg, and from 1877 until his death he was a member of the Protestant theological faculty of the Sorbonne, Paris. Sabatier became noted as a liberal theologian, stressing the subjective, symbolic nature of religious knowledge and the need for continual revision of religious dogmas in the light of personal experience.
