The most common bats of the temperate Northern Hemisphere are the Old World horseshoe bats ( Rhinolophus ), characterized by one or two horseshoe-shaped facial appendages, the cosmopolitan little brown bats ( Myotis ), big brown bats, or serotines ( Eptesicus ), and pipistrelles ( Pipistrellus ).
