The Energy Policy and Conservation Act, passed in 1975, specified that car manufacturers must meet a sales weighted "Corporate Average Fuel Economy" (CAFE) standard of 20 miles per gallon by the 1980 model year and 27.5 miles per gallon by the 1985 model year.
