Alaric devastated Thrace, Macedonia, and Greece. Stopped, but not defeated, by Stilicho , he retired northward, and by an agreement with the Eastern emperor, Arcadius , occupied Epirus. In 401 he invaded Italy, where after some indecisive warfare he agreed to withdraw.
