Fans have been packing stadiums, arenas and ballparks for years in anticipation of being entertained by professional and college athletes. The origins of these venues have changed dramatically over the years. From playing football and baseball in open fields without seats to modern palaces costing billions of dollars to construct, the games have stayed the same, but where they are played has changed dramatically

The history of stadiums goes back centuries to the Olympia in Greece. Beginning in 776 BC, games, including the first Olympic Games, were held in this location. Over time additional stadiums sprang up in other parts of Greece and Italy.

Over the course of time stadiums and arenas have undergone a number of changes in design, functionality, and amenities. The additions of seats, concession stands, lights, and corporate boxes have made watching a game easier.

Pro Teams Stadiums and Arenas

There have been many famous stadiums and arena in professional sports. Over the course of time some stadiums and arenas have either closed, been renovated, been re-built, or remained essentially the same. In baseball, Wrigley Field in Chicago, New York’s Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium, and Fenway Park in Boston have been familiar locations for baseball fans for many years. Many famous pro football games have been played at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Soldiers Field in Chicago, Giants Stadium in New Jersey, and at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Stadium.  Pro basketball teams have played at many several famous arenas including Madison Square Garden in New York, Los Angeles Forum, and the Boston Garden.  Pro hockey has many famous arenas in its history including the Montreal Forum, Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, and the Philadelphia Spectrum.  Other famous professional team stadiums and arenas also exist.

College Stadiums and Arenas

The first college football game was held at Rutgers in New Jersey in 1869. Since that time, college football has become a very popular sport with millions of people attending games each year on college campuses around the United States. College football stadiums can range in size from moderate sized fields that seat 30 or 40 thousand to huge stadiums that can seat over 100 thousand fans. Among the most famous are Michigan Stadium, Neyland Stadium on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Penn State’s Beaver Stadium, the Los Angeles Coliseum, and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. College basketball, with its annual March Madness, is also a very popular sport.  Some of the more famous basketball arenas include Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA campus and the University of North Carolina’s Dean Smith Center.  Other college football stadium and basketball arena resources can be readily found.

Other Stadiums

There are many other famous stadiums around the world. These house various events, but are most notable for soccer games played there. Wembley Stadium in London has recently been rebuilt and is one of the most famous soccer pitches. Other famous stadiums include Camp Nou in Barcelona and San Siro in Milan.

Horse racing has been one of the most popular attractions for centuries. Some of the more famous tracks include Churchill Downs in Louisville, Belmont Park in New York, and Santa Anita in California.
