He is best known for his dedicated efforts in shaping the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Oceanographic Institute at Woods Hole, Mass. In addition to many scientific papers, he wrote The Development of the Chick (1908, 3d ed. 1952), a leading text in embryology, and The Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory (1944).
