In the United States, as elsewhere, awareness of the environmental damage and threats to health (see pollution ; environmentalism ) caused by DDT, dieldrin, and other insecticides and by the excessive use of chemical fertilizers has fostered interest in organic gardening, particularly among home gardeners.
